Nicole Yeow-Traditional Games

I have moved all my updates from the post to here.

Introduction on my part in the Malay Culture Website and also the Procedures and Methods used.

 Name: Nicole Yeow Yee Cheng
 ID: 1081101163

For the task distribution, I will be doing on my part, Traditional Games and Past Time.

What I am doing for my part on traditional games and past time?

I have sort out a few traditional games which is very popular, are commonly played and known widely.

1. Gasing
2. Congkak
3. Wau
4. Batu Seremban
5. Sepak Takraw
6.Batu Seremban
7. Wayang Kulit

Work Progress Part A

Here is the draft idea on how my part link to the main blog.

I have done a rough flowchart on my part of the website. And have already designed the GUI for my website which is going to be the same as the main GUI. The current photo for the GUI is not the final GUI but the concept remains the same.

Here is the draft idea on how the main website would be
this is the one where it will link to each and every one of our parts

Here is the example of the GUI designed by me using photoshop and put in place using dreamweaver.
I posted this up in the facebook group so that we can discuss about it.
In fact our group members did ask to change the colour of the some of the things.

Here is the banner that I made using photoshop where I combine all the element of our group where we are ask to do.
I google up some images on what I think that is about my group members topic which are
traditional clothing, food, festival, traditional games and traditional weapon
I try to put them together.

I use photoshop to put all my picture together
Then I use the blur tool at 1st to try to merge the images together but it turned out too blurry.

Next I try to blend the images together using a bit of eraser tool where i play with the size and hardness.
Then, I try to create some colour contrast in the font and also the size of the font to emphasize on our topic that is Malay Culture
During lecture class, we learn about design principle. I tried to use that method in creating this banner.

How do the main website link to my part?
Here how it the flow chart looks like.
This may look simple but it is more than that.

This is the flowchart for my part (traditional games) of the entire website.
The main website is about malay culture which will link to mine part and also the part of my other group members.
I emphasize on my topic which is traditional games.
Subtopic is the topic I will be talking about that is

1. Gasing
2. Congkak
3. Wau
4. Batu Seremban
5. Sepak Takraw
6.Batu Seremban
7. Wayang Kulit

Then I will include the content about the game and also gallery the picture or the game
Flash is different colour because it is optional as too many flash can make the reader lose interest.

Work Progress Part B

I create some buttons for the pages so that I can link to my pages easily.
I create this button using photoshop. I try to emphasize on the colour contrast of the button.

This is how it looks like when I put it in dreamweaver
Buttons I created earlier in photoshop is put into dreamweaver so that they can become my button.
The background of the dreamweaver I keep it black so that my white banner and also the button will pop out.
White make it too bright and not very catchy to the eyes.

Next I use photoshop again to update in the pictures I taken online.
I put a header on each and every one of the subtopics

I use the ruler tool too so that I can ensure that the header is in the middle of the pictures.
I also use the eyedropper tool so that I can get the same colour for the header and also the colour of the font
I was planning to create a picture to show the topic I am going to do. It is something like a header.

Work Progress Part C

This part is mainly on flash
I wanted to show my readers some of the pictures of traditional games but it will not be auto movement because I myself do not like the screen suddenly change without me finish viewing. So my flash is to click and that picture will change.

Firstly, a simple black base as the background. I made 4 layers for this part. 1st being the Actions, Base, Images, Buttons and Text, respectively.

Next, I inserted an image. But the the images should be same size and have them on the same exact location for every frame

Finally, I inserted a triangular button of the same size. I create one button and copy it on the other side then use Free Transform and have it rotate 180 degrees. I adjusted my text to make it look as if it's on the center.

Finally, the most hardest part = coding.I asked my group leader to help me out a little bit since he did his quite successfully. I am able to get the help and my flash is able to work properly. Thanks to him for help me with this flash.

Below the page of each of the traditional games subtopic, i create some links.
The links are the subtopics of traditional games. This is for the reader convenience so that the reader would not go through the tedious process of clicking on the main page, go through traditional games and also go through the page to read the article.
I also set that the colour of the link to change after they are visited. This is to ensure that the reader able to keep track on which point have they read.

Work Progress Part D

Part D is where I test out everything. Checking and linking all my webpages to the buttons, images, testing out the flash and also to see whether the user is having difficulties accessing the information on my part that is the traditional games.

This is my part looks like in mozilla firefox.
I cant get the full screenshot as I it is very small when zoom out.
This is the best I can get to show the
banner location, the buttons, a short introduction on my part, pictures able to be click to link to the information given, then a picture gallery flash then pictures that able to be click again.

This is the view of the information for each and everyone of my subtopics
This is a screenshot of the wayang kulit subtopic of traditional games.
There arrangement is banner, buttons, infomations and picture, flash, references, then links to link to other subtopic for easy reading.

For references

Initial Stage of referencing just to browse to get some ideas

I use Warisan Budaya Malaysia the most since there are a lot of information on traditional games

I also use this website for traditional games research

I also use Malaysian tourism main website for references as well..

I use google image to get some of the images in need for my gallery and also the banner
like guli or marble, wau , wayang kulit, gasing, congkak, batu seremban, sepak takraw and many more

Later on while doing the webpage I divide my references according to the subtopic. This is for the information I gather from various sources and also the photo and pictures taken from

For wayang kulit
I just give a short summary of the articles I went through. I also include some picture in the website so that readers are able to imagine and understand what I was talking about and referring to.

Wayang Kulit or commonly known as Wayang originated from Indonesia. Translated literally, Wayang Kulit means 'Skin Show'.

Wayang Kulit is a popular shadow puppet show in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, especially those in Kota Bharu, Kelantan and Terengganu.

The reason behind the name is that the wayang kulit characters are made out of buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks.

When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with lamps as their light source, shadows are cast on the screen.

The wayang kulit is usually directed by a conductor known as the 'Tok Dalang'. The 'Tok Dalang' is in charge of performing the narration, as well as the puppet master performing the acts.

 For Guli

I just give a short summary of the articles I went through. I also include some picture in the website so that readers are able to imagine and understand what I was talking about and referring to.

Guli or glass marbles is a popular game among boys of the age between 7-12 years old.

The game is played with no more than 5 players.

It is a game of accuracy.

Each player has to hit a target at the centre of the arena which is usually a circle which is around 1 m in diameter.

Gasing or the top is popular in the peninsula especially in the state of Kelantan.

Gasing is usually made from wood and have steel plates as an armor, but the wood most suitable to make a good gasing is from merbau trees as it is not easy to splinter.

It is played in two methods which is gasing pangkah or gasing uri.

As a gasing pangkah, the objective is to knock out the opponent's top. AS a gasing uri, the objective is to endure the spin as long as possible.

To spin the gasing, a string as thick as 1.75cm and as with a length of 3-5m have to be spun all the way to the edge. And then thrown and pull the string simultaneously to make it spin.

Wau commonly known as wau bulan is a normal kite game.

There are many types and shapes of wau.

Bird wau, frog wau, peacock wau, cat wau and many more but one wau that is a favourite among the malays is the Moon Wau more known as Wau Bulan.

Originated from China, Wau has become a traditional Malay game over many generations.

A wau is usually made from bamboo and rattan.

However there are some taboos and sayings in choosing the right bamboo. Such taboos include:

1. The bamboo used must be from a high and open space not in a bush.
2. Only choose the bamboo that is dry especially the one in the centre.
3.Do not use bamboo with young shoots as they usually have pests.
4. According to common belief, it is best to use a bamboo that is bent towards the direction of the rising sun as they have better spirit.
5.Best time for getting bamboo is during hot and dry time such as the afternoon.
6. If cutting the bamboo in the morning, the cutter must not be behind the bamboo's shadow.
7. Before cutting, one should say the prayers(refers to verses from the Quran).
8. It is best to cut the bamboo from places where the bamboo has been cut before.
9. According to some Kelantan sayings, one must leave a message to a Sang Bubuk after cutting the bamboo which is "Wahai Sang Bubuk, hak aku tinggal ini adalah hak mu, hak aku wat kelik ni ialah hak aku, mu tok sah ikut akulah, mu make hok sini."

Kelantan and Terengganu still keep the tradition of making this interesting wau and also the methods used to make this wonderful wau.

Besides, making it as a past time games, the wau are also made as souverniers and also wall decorations.

For Congkak

Congkak is a mancala game of Malay origin.

Usually a congkak board has a total of 14 holes where it is located 7 holes for each player.

Like mancala, the objective is to gather as many beads on the board as possible by distributing it into every single hole excluding the opponent's hole.

At the starting point, each hole has a maximum of 7 beads, and they'll be distributed evenly until the last bead is in either one of the player's scores.

The beads traditionally were made of cowrie shells however modern versions used glass marbles.

For Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw is a game similar to volleyball except the players are allowed to use any parts of their body except their hands and arms.

Sepak takraw is only played by guys.

It is played with 6 players. 3 on each team. The objective of the game is to make the opponent lose control of the ball and gain points.

The traditional sepak takraw ball was made using rattan.

Other than that, another method of playing Sepak Takraw is called Sepak Raga.

In Sepak Raga, a team of 8 players must keep the ball in air for as long as possible.

The game was introduced in the times of the Malaccan Sultanate.

In Malay history, it is told that the 'tanjak' of Raja Muhammad, prince to Sultan Mansor Shah Muhammad fall off due to the raga ball kicked by the head of minister.

For Batu Seremban

Batu Seremban or also known as Selambut or Serembat was played mainly by girls either solo or in groups of 2-4 or more.

The objective is to reach the most stages in a game of hand reflexes.

Each stage increases in difficulty. It may looked easy with only fve small bags but it is not as easy as you think.

Batu Seremban commonly uses small bags of saga seeds, glass marbles, rubber seeds or any object that is small enough to put on the back of the hand.

The game is played by trying throwing a piece of the object or more into the air from the back of the hands and catch it.

Players have to sit on a smooth, clean and even surface to play this game so that the batu seremban can be easily played.

Method of communication between my group

For the main method of communication, I've relied on the Facebook group set up by my leader the most. It has become a place where the group leader issued instructions and even a place where we share our knowledge. We also use the facebook chat to ask question between each other. One advantage is we can view the history of the conversation again and also for those who were not online on urgent matter, they are able to view it when they come online and also continue the conversation and to ask questions on what they have missed out.
We do share  some links in this group too. By using a file transfer protocol, e.g. Mediafire, we were able to share each other's website and progress easily.

Besides that, we do use other method of communication too.
That is calling and short mesage system (sms) to communicate between members.
For sending informations, it  is through emails.
